Review

I became a fan of Hannah Howell’s Highlanders a couple of years ago, after my daughter brought an audiobook of hers along on our 14 hour trip down south.  I really enjoyed it so I began purchasing her books and audiobooks regularly.  This book is one of my favorites! Howell’s usual hero & heroine are strong and caring, yet has have their own inner turmoil.  The book has adventure, romance and is full of suspense.  When we went on our annual trip this year, this is what we brought and it made the time fly!  I highly recommend it!

Deal: My Three Decades of Drumming, Dreams, and Drugs with the Grateful Dead

    Product DetailsDeal
by Bill Kreutzmann and Benjy Eisen
    Tantor
    Retail Price:  $34.95
    Amazon Price: $20.47

Book Description:   On their fiftieth anniversary comes a groundbreaking rock-and-roll memoir by one of the founding members of the Grateful Dead.

The Grateful Dead are perhaps the most legendary American rock band of all time. For thirty years, beginning in the hippie scene of San Francisco in 1965, they were a musical institution, the original jam band that broke new ground in so many ways. From the music to their live-concert sound systems and fan recordings, they were forward-thinking champions of artistic control and outlaw artists who marched to the beat of their own drums.

Bill Kreutzmann, one of their founding members and drummer for every one of their over 2,300-dd concerts, has written an unflinching and wild account of playing in the greatest improvisational band of all time. Everything a rock music fan would expect is here, but what sets this apart is Bill’s incredible life of adventure, which was at the heart of the Grateful Dead experience. This was a band that knew no limits, and Bill lived life to the fullest, pushing the boundaries of drugs, drums, and high times, through devastating tragedy and remarkable triumph.

But at this book’s beating heart is the music — theirs and others. Some of the greatest musicians and concerts were a part of the Grateful Dead’s career, from sharing the stage with Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, and the Who, to playing in the Acid Tests, the Monterey Pop Festival, Woodstock, and Altamont. Bill’s life is a chronicle of American music and pop-culture history, and his epic personal journey is one of sonic discovery and thrilling experiences.

    Review

I am a Grateful Dead fan from way back so I really enjoyed this memoir of Bill Kreutzmann.  I read the book myself and enjoyed it so much that I bought the audiobook for my husband to listen to on his work commute.  There were so many good, original stories about the band and other bands that they encountered in their career that I knew he would enjoy it…and he just loved it!  This book offers you an in depth, uncensored look at the Grateful Dead and I highly recommend it in both the print and audio verions.

      Adeline

      Product DetailsAdeline
      By Norah Vincent
      Tantor
      Retail Price:  $32.99
      Amazon Price: $23.99

Book Description:  On April 18, 1941, twenty-two days after Virginia Woolf went for a walk near her weekend house in Sussex and never returned, her body was reclaimed from the River Ouse. Norah Vincent’s Adeline reimagines the events that brought Woolf to the riverbank, offering us a denouement worthy of its protagonist.

With poetic precision and psychological acuity, Vincent channels Virginia and Leonard Woolf, T. S. and Vivienne Eliot, Lytton Strachey and Dora Carrington, laying bare their genius and their blind spots, their achievements and their failings, from the inside out. And haunting every page is Adeline, the name given to Virginia Stephen at birth, which becomes the source of Virginia’s greatest consolation, and her greatest torment.

      Review

This is a really fine piece of historical fiction, perhaps among the best of its kind.  It covers the life of Virginia Woolf between 1925 to her drowning in 1941. There are a wide group of notables from the Bloomsbury Group here, and it’s obvious the author loves her story, and the whole aura of the period. If you are a fan of literary fiction and the great writers of this genre, then you will find this an interesting book to read.  I chose the audio version as it makes it easy for me to digest great books while driving to work.  The narrator did a fantastic job and helped my overall experience with the book to be enjoyable.

        Travels

        Travels
        By Michael Crichton
        Brilliance Audio
        Retail Price:  $14.00
        Amazon Price: $13.04

        Book Description:

From the bestselling author of Jurassic Park, Timeline, and Sphere comes a deeply personal memoir full of fascinating adventures as he travels everywhere from the Mayan pyramids to Kilimanjaro.

Fueled by a powerful curiosity―and by a need to see, feel, and hear, firsthand and close-up―Michael Crichton’s journeys have carried him into worlds diverse and compelling―swimming with mud sharks in Tahiti, tracking wild animals through the jungle of Rwanda. This is a record of those travels―an exhilarating quest across the familiar and exotic frontiers of the outer world, a determined odyssey into the unfathomable, spiritual depths of the inner world. It is an adventure of risk and rejuvenation, terror and wonder, as exciting as Michael Crichton’s many masterful and widely heralded works of fiction.

For Michael Crichton, being a Harvard-trained physician, the author of two bestsellers, and a movie director is not enough. It is, he resolves, time to travel. From swimming with sharks in Tahiti to psychic experiences in the American desert, Crichton records his exhilarating quest through the familiar and exotic frontiers of the outer world.

        Review

This book is partly a travelogue of the many travels of author Michael Crichton, yet it is much more.  It gives you a glimpse into the man’s very soul to see how his life experiences have shaped him into becoming who is his.  While I usually read his fiction work, I loved that this was a audio version as I felt like I was right there with him as the book was read to me.  I listened on my long commute to and from work and I found myself longing for that time in the car when I could listen to Crichton’s adventures and dream of planning my own adventures.  I was very pleased with this audiobook and highly recommend it!

          Blackstone Audio

          Book Description:

Introducing the new, realistic loyalty pact between employer and employee. – – The employer-employee relationship is broken, and managers face a seemingly impossible dilemma: the old model of guaranteed long-term employment no longer works in a business environment defined by continuous change, but neither does a system in which every employee acts like a free agent. – – The solution? Stop thinking of employees as either family or free agents. Think of them instead as allies. – – As a manager you want your employees to help transform the company for the future. And your employees want the firm to help transform their careers. But this win-win scenario will only happen if both sides trust each other enough to commit to mutual investment and mutual benefit. Sadly, trust in the business world is hovering at an all-time low. – – We can rebuild that lost trust with straight talk that recognizes the realities of the modern economy. So paradoxically, the alliance begins with managers acknowledging that great employees might leave the company, and with employees being honest about their own career aspirations. – – By putting this new alliance at the heart of your talent-management strategy, you’ll not only bring back trust, you’ll be able to recruit and retain the entrepreneurial individuals you need to adapt to a fast-changing world. – – These individuals – flexible, creative, and with a bias toward action – thrive when they’re on a specific ”tour of duty,” when they have a mission that’s mutually beneficial to employee and company that can be completed in a realistic period of time. – – Coauthored by the founder of LinkedIn, this bold but practical guide for managers and executives will give you the tools you need to recruit, manage, and retain the kind of employees who will make your company thrive in today’s world of constant innovation and fast-paced change.

          Review

This book is a how-to about managing employees in both large and small company settings.  Since people view work differently and no longer stay loyal to the company like in the past, the authors look at ways to retain and acquire new talent for your organization.   The authors bring much to the table including how to manage people with respect, lending them to greater company loyalty while they are with you and when they leave.  This is all about reframing relationships with team members.  This was an excellent book to listen to on my commute to work

            Review

This was an interesting romance novel that used wry humor, captivating dialogue, well-developed and interesting characters, and surprising but believable plot twists to tell the tale love and romance.  James doesn’t write about “pie in the sky”, unrealistic romantic scenerios, but her plot is realistic and down to earth.  As you follow this love story you will find yourself rooting for the perfect ending, but not quite sure if it will actually end up that way.  The narrator Karen White does a great job relaying the story so it made it easy to listen to.

              Tantor
              Retail Price $27.95
              Amazon Price: $20.93

              Book Description:

Their idea was simple. Four NYU undergrads wanted to build a social network that would allow users to control their personal data, instead of surrendering it to big businesses like Facebook. They called it Diaspora. In days, they raised $200,000, and reporters, venture capitalists, and the digital community’s most legendary figures
were soon monitoring their progress. Max dreamed of being a CEO. Ilya was the idealist. Dan coded like a pro, and Rafi tried to keep them all on track. But as the months passed and the money ran out, the Diaspora Four fell victim to errors, bad decisions, and their own hubris. In November 2011, Ilya committed suicide.

Diaspora has been tech news since day one, but the story reaches far beyond Silicon Valley to the now urgent issues about the future of the Internet. With the cooperation of the surviving partners, New York Times bestselling author Jim Dwyer tells a riveting story of four ambitious and naive young men who tried to rebottle the genie of personal privacy—and paid the ultimate price.

              Review

This is an excellent book and made for enjoyable listening on my work commute.  It is the story of four Techie NYU students with high ideals that undertake a project to create a social network that will protect the privacy of its participants, but are overwhelmed by their own personal tragedy. Even though these guys didn’t become a traditional success , their story is captivating and there is much to learn from it.  I highly recommend it.

                  Review

I had an option to read and review this book for extra credit for my college finance course. I was not looking forward to reading it and it didn’t sound interesting at all so I chose to listen to it instead.  I was pleasantly surprised as this was not a boring book at all, but an intriguing novel with plenty of takeaway value. You are drawn into the story from the very beginning and it touches on the both personal relationships as well as business issues.  Goldratt tells the story of Alex Rogo who is trying to save his job, his facility, as well as his marriage.  This book was done and taught and emphasized important values from a management and engineering point of view. Though fiction, this book could have been real life as seen in the case study reviews and audio archives included on the CD.

This four book series is among the best reviewed humor books published today and has been compared to the late greats, Erma Bombeck and Nora Ephron. Booklist raved of the third book in the series, Meet Me At Emotional Baggage Claim,  “readers can count on an ab-toning laugh session, a silly giggle, a sympathetic sigh, and a lump in the throat as life’s moments are rehashed through the keen eyes and wits of this lovable mother-daughter duo.” This fourth volume, Have a Nice Guilt Trip, maintains the same sterling standard of humor and poignancy as Lisa and Francesca continue on the road of life acquiring men and puppies. Ok, to be honest, Lisa is acquiring the puppies, while Francesca is lucky enough to have dates with actual men. They leave it to the listeners to decide which is more desirable and/or or easier to train.

This is yet another hit by Lisa Scottoline and her daughter Francesca.  I usually read their books, but was going on a road trip with my adult daughter and we decided we would listen to this book instead.  I wasn’t sure how I’d like it, but I found it very entertaining and it passed the time away. The humor is uplifting and makes you laugh.  Their stories really hit home because they could be my own!  Each essay is short enough to hold your interest, yet they do have interesting takeaway value.  I highly recommend this audiobook!
