Review

Kevin Eastman and Tom Waltz have done a wonderful job with this TMNT reboot.  Their work remains to be among the most interesting and entertaining runs in comics at the moment. This TMNT series can easily stand next to most of DC’s and Marvel’s finest titles. The all around writing is by far its brightest highlight as its full of action, great character interactions, suspense, plot build up, and future storyline building. The artwork also manages to stand out quite nicely.   My kids grew up with TMNT and my son has followed them over the years and has introduced them to his own children.  He has  collected TMNT memorabilia over the years and this book is just perfect for his collection.  The art is eye catching and stories are presented in order.  It’s nice to have them all in one volume.  The book is well-made so it will hold up to being handled by those who want to browse through it.  It makes a great coffee table book and conversation piece.  I highly recommend it for TMNT fans all over the globe!

The fact that Earl’s a dog and Mooch is more of the feline persuasion makes about as much difference as a flea’s eyebrow. These guys have a special friendship. Anyone who has a pet will see themselves and their beloved furry housemates in this collection.

      Review

The Common Core  advocates the use of comics in the classroom to promote literacy and improve educational outcomes for all students.  This book combines great graphics with interesting stories that cross disciplines.  My son was so taken with this book that it kept him occupied for hours.  If you are a teacher, administrator, or librarian, buy a few copies of this book for your school. It would be a bargain at twice the price. If you are a parent, buy a copy for home. It s hard to find quality kid-friendly titles that are as delightful to read as this one is

        Book Description:

The all-time classic cartoon Peanuts reaches out to a new audience of kids in the specially curated series of AMP! Comics for Kids.

        Put me in, Coach!

The Peanuts gang is ready to play ball in this collection of baseball-themed cartoons. Some of the most popular Peanuts moments happen on the field and they’re gathered here for a season full of enjoyment. As manager of the endlessly losing team, Charlie Brown soldiers on to keep his team’s spirits up, while being constantly blown off the pitching mound in a clothes-exploding fashion. It doesn’t help that his catcher is a musician by nature or that his shortstop is a dog. Not to mention that center-fielder Lucy can’t keep her mouth shut long enough to know what’s going on in the game! Put them all together and you get a game plan for laughs!

First published in 1950, the classic Peanuts strip now appears in more than 2,200 newspapers in 75 countries in 25 languages. Phrases such as “security blanket” and “good grief,” which originated in the Peanuts world, are now part of the global vernacular, and images of Charles Schulz’s classic characters—Charlie Brown kicking the football, Lucy leaning over Schroeder’s piano—are now universally recognized.

        Review

Charles Schulz’s Peanuts is one of the most timeless and beloved comic strips ever. Now AMP! helps carry on that legacy with new collections of Peanuts classics focused around topics sure to resonate with middle-grade readers. I adored the Peanuts comic strips as a child as well as all the TV specials.  So did my kids.  Now it is time for THEIR kids to be able to enjoy them as well.  I am so grateful for this collection to share with my grandkids.  The particular collection centers around the theme of baseball and is perfect to share with my grandsons.  We enjoy reading them together and sharing our own insights.  This series, and this particular collection, is a keeper!

          Amazon Price: $8.99

          Book Description:

Always witty and clever, and sometimes irreverent, Pearls Before Swine‘s sarcastic take on life appeals to fans of all ages. In this second collection of cartoons specially chosen for young readers, the troupe of characters is back to entertain with dark humor and off-the-wall puns. Know-it-all Rat is always at the center of the action, accompanied by slow-witted Pig who is innocently oblivious to most of Rat’s jabs. Rounded out with high-browed Goat, the mild and vulnerable Zebra, and the hilariously inept Crocs, the cast is ready to provide hours of reading fun.

          Review

In my opinion “Pearls Before Swine” is one of the best comic strips of all time.  My kids love it as well, but sometimes it is a bit over their head.  In this book, the author reaches out to the younger generation by creating a book of comic strips just for them.  You get all of your favorite characters in this book, just created for kids.  This is a great way to introduce your kids to Stephan Pastis’ work that can be enjoyed for a lifetime.  I highly recommend it.

            Genius, Animated

            Genius, Animated
By Dean Mullaney, Bruce Canwell and Alex Toth
            IDW
            Retail Price $49.99
            Amazon Price: $36.96

            Book Description:

The Library of American Comics concludes its in-depth look at Alex Toth’s life and art with Genius, Animated. This companion volume to 2011’s award-winning Genius, Isolated and 2013’s Genius, Illustrated zooms in to focus on Toth’s groundbreaking contributions in the field of animation and features many rarely-seen or never-before-published pieces of art, much of it uncovered in the archives of Hanna-Barbera Studios! Featuring presentation illustrations for unsold series, character designs and storyboards for old favorites such as Space Ghost, SHAZZAN, and Superfriends, and work taken from both the beginning (Space Angel) and end (Bionic 6) of Toth’s “Saturday kidvid” career, this oversized artbook features observations from animation professionals about his work, plus Alex’s own commentary on the cartoon shows that shaped a generation. Genius, Animated is filled, cover-to-cover, with must-see material, making it essential reading for Toth-fans and animation enthusiasts alike.

            Review

Alexander Toth was an American cartoonist active from the 1940s through the 1980s and he died in 2006. His work began in the American comic book industry, but he is also known for his animation designs for Hanna-Barbera throughout the 1960s and 1970s. While something of an acquired taste, Toth is unquestionably one of the greatest artists in comic history. This is the third book in a series and like the first two, this volume is just chock full of art – one of the best gatherings of Toth are in these three volumes. The authors have successfully created a combination of prose and pictures, which meshes well.   While I’d recommend this book for any comics fan or scholar, for a Toth fan, it is an absolute must.

              Review

What a great book and an interesting way to explain the inner workings of the brain to an ordinary Joe like me!  Crossing over art and science was just genius! This book takes you on a tour of your brain and helps you to understand things like how we remember, how we perceive things, and how we recall information.  It also touches on the difference between the mind and the brain.  I found this book very enlightening and recommend it not only for adults but for teens interested in science as well.

Rat is the arrogant know-it-all, taking constant advantage of the naive and simple Pig, with wise and pedantic Goat looking on in detached disapproval. The incredibly inept Crocs still hold hopes of eating their Zeeba neighbors. Throw in cameo appearances by Guard Duck and Snuffles the Cat and you get the full tableau of Pearls comedy.

Stephan’s personal annotations lend insight and more humor to this Pearls Before Swine rendition.

                Review

I love this comic strip and have become a collector of all things “Pearls Before Swine.”  This was the latest addition to my collection and I am very pleased. The book is full of strips with the iconic one-liners, witty puns, and extensive verbal gags. Like the previous collections before it, this collection has a little bit of everything. The characters are hilarious and there is nothing political. These cartoons will have you laughing in seconds of opening the cover.
