Review

I became a fan of Hannah Howell’s Highlanders a couple of years ago, after my daughter brought an audiobook of hers along on our 14 hour trip down south.  I really enjoyed it so I began purchasing her books and audiobooks regularly.  This book is one of my favorites! Howell’s usual hero & heroine are strong and caring, yet has have their own inner turmoil.  The book has adventure, romance and is full of suspense.  When we went on our annual trip this year, this is what we brought and it made the time fly!  I highly recommend it!

    Adeline

    Product DetailsAdeline
    By Norah Vincent
    Tantor
    Retail Price:  $32.99
    Amazon Price: $23.99

Book Description:  On April 18, 1941, twenty-two days after Virginia Woolf went for a walk near her weekend house in Sussex and never returned, her body was reclaimed from the River Ouse. Norah Vincent’s Adeline reimagines the events that brought Woolf to the riverbank, offering us a denouement worthy of its protagonist.

With poetic precision and psychological acuity, Vincent channels Virginia and Leonard Woolf, T. S. and Vivienne Eliot, Lytton Strachey and Dora Carrington, laying bare their genius and their blind spots, their achievements and their failings, from the inside out. And haunting every page is Adeline, the name given to Virginia Stephen at birth, which becomes the source of Virginia’s greatest consolation, and her greatest torment.

    Review

This is a really fine piece of historical fiction, perhaps among the best of its kind.  It covers the life of Virginia Woolf between 1925 to her drowning in 1941. There are a wide group of notables from the Bloomsbury Group here, and it’s obvious the author loves her story, and the whole aura of the period. If you are a fan of literary fiction and the great writers of this genre, then you will find this an interesting book to read.  I chose the audio version as it makes it easy for me to digest great books while driving to work.  The narrator did a fantastic job and helped my overall experience with the book to be enjoyable.

      Review

This was an interesting romance novel that used wry humor, captivating dialogue, well-developed and interesting characters, and surprising but believable plot twists to tell the tale love and romance.  James doesn’t write about “pie in the sky”, unrealistic romantic scenerios, but her plot is realistic and down to earth.  As you follow this love story you will find yourself rooting for the perfect ending, but not quite sure if it will actually end up that way.  The narrator Karen White does a great job relaying the story so it made it easy to listen to.

by Antonia Hodgosn and John Lee

        Retail Price $39.99
        Amazon Price: $26.47

        Book Description:

It’s 1727. Tom Hawkins is damned if he’s going to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a country parson. Not for him a quiet life of prayer and propriety. His preference is for wine, women, and cards. But there’s a sense of honor there too, and Tom won’t pull family strings to get himself out of debt—not even when faced with the appalling horrors of London’s notorious debtors’ prison: The Marshalsea Gaol.

Within moments of his arrival in the Marshalsea, Hawkins learns there’s a murderer on the loose, a ghost is haunting the gaol, and that he’ll have to scrounge up the money to pay for his food, bed, and drink. He’s quick to accept an offer of free room and board from the mysterious Samuel Fleet—only to find out just hours later that it was Fleet’s last roommate who turned up dead. Tom’s choice is clear: get to the truth of the murder—or be the next to die.

        Review

The audiobook version of this novel transports you back in time to 18th century London.  It follows the life of Tom Hawkins, a church boy gone bad who ended up in debtors prison and also introduces the listener to several interesting characters. The author has clearly done his research of the time period and as you visualize the scene, you feel like you are there.  This is really quite a thriller with many twists and turns.  It does have it’s gruesome side with heavy does of violence, so this book is not for the faint of heart.

          Review

My daughter and I were looking for a good audiobook to listen to on a 14 hour car and since we heard good things about it, we decided on The Storied Life of A.J. Firky.  I am so glad we did!   This book was easy to listen to and the plot was easy to get absorbed in.  I can honestly say that this book is one of the best that is out there. Never has a fictional book touched my heart as this has. The author gives an array of characters to love (or like, or not like so much!) and a sense of community as we se A.J. Firky grieve his losses, let go of bitterness, and move on and grow as a person.  This story is a testament to life-changing fiction, which I think this book is!

            The Son of No One

The Son ofSon of No One (Dark-Hunter Series #18) No One
            By Sherilynn Kenyon
            Macmillan Audio
            Retail Price $39.95
            Amazon Price: $27.75

            Book Description:

In Son of No One, next in the blockbuster The Dark-Hunters series by Sherrilyn Kenyon, it’s not easy being life’s own personal joke, but Josette Landry has made an unstable peace with the beast. Completely down on her luck, Josette takes a job with a local paranormal group as a photographer and camerawoman. Yeah, they’re even crazier than she is. The only paranormal thing she believes in is the miracle that keeps her rusted out hoopty running. But when something truly evil is released into the world, they are forced to call in reinforcement.

From the moment Josette meets Cadegan, she knows something about him isn’t quite right. Mysterious and armed with lethal sarcasm, he seems a lot older than his age.

Centuries ago, Cadegan was viciously betrayed into an immortal prison by the only person he’d ever trusted. Forced against his will to do good, he hates everything in life. All he wants is a way out. But for the damned there is only eternal suffering. And yet there is something about Josette that intrigues him. Something he can’t seem to fight and the last time he felt this way about a woman, it cost him everything.

He knows he has to stay away from her, but the unleashed demon is hellbent on consuming her soul. If one more innocent is taken, he will be sent back to an unimaginable prison that makes his current hell look like paradise. But how can he keep her safe when his being with her is the greatest threat of all?

            Review

I think one of the most anticipated aspects about this series are the hints, clues and information given regarding the multitude of intriguing, mysterious and compelling characters introduced. They are the ones you want to know more about, but Kenyon keeps a tight grip on every piece of itty bitty info and I predict she will eternally keep you craving for more, because the amount of such characters she creates isn’t exactly small and at least in every book there is a new addition to this elite secretive club of hunks. At times it annoys me, but the joy of finding out something new always compensates for the frustration. I liked Cadegan, he was sympathetic, kickass and tortured, but not in an overdoing kind of way. Despite everything, he was a nice guy not some bitter and hateful bad-ass. That was a pleasant surprise and kind of refreshing. I enjoyed this book so much. Can’t wait for the next book.

              Review

I had an option to read and review this book for extra credit for my college finance course. I was not looking forward to reading it and it didn’t sound interesting at all so I chose to listen to it instead.  I was pleasantly surprised as this was not a boring book at all, but an intriguing novel with plenty of takeaway value. You are drawn into the story from the very beginning and it touches on the both personal relationships as well as business issues.  Goldratt tells the story of Alex Rogo who is trying to save his job, his facility, as well as his marriage.  This book was done and taught and emphasized important values from a management and engineering point of view. Though fiction, this book could have been real life as seen in the case study reviews and audio archives included on the CD.

                Review

This was a fantastic book to listen to.  Though this is the third book in the trilogy by author J.C. Reed, it still keeps you on the edge of your seat.  It is a steamy continuation of Brooke and Jett’s story, so I do recommend reading or listening to the first two books before going on to this one.  This book has it all…love, sex, intrigue, drama. You don’t want to stop the cd!  And just when you think you have figured out the mystery regarding the black book you are thrown for a loop!

Siri and Jon have two daughters, and together they spend their summers on the coast of Norway, in a mansion belonging to Jenny Brodal, Siri’s stylish and unforgiving mother.

One rainy July night, Milla disappears without a trace. After her remains are discovered and a suspect is identified, everyone who had any connection with her feels implicated in her tragedy and haunted by what they could have done to prevent it.

The Cold Song is a story about telling stories and about how life is continually invented and reinvented.

                  Review

This was a rather sad book about family dysfunction and self-loathing and self-blame.  The author investigates deep into our inner thoughts and through the characters brings to light our own deepest insecurities.  The narrator did a great job telling the story and keeping you interested in the storyline.  I listened to this on trip up North and it kept my interest to the end. While it was a bit sad, I did enjoy it and would recommend it.

Orange Beach, Alabama, is a simple town filled with simple people.  But like all humans on the planet, the good folks of Orange Beach have their share of problems—marriages teetering on the brink of divorce, young adults giving up on life, business people on the verge of bankruptcy, as well as the many other obstacles that life seems to dish out to the masses.Fortunately, when things look the darkest, a mysterious man named Jones has a miraculous way of showing up.  An elderly man with white hair, of indiscriminate age and race, wearing blue jeans, a white T-shirt and leather flip flops carrying a battered old suitcase, Jones is a unique soul.  Communicating what he calls “a little perspective,” he explains that he has been given a gift of noticing things that others miss.  “Your time on this earth is a gift to be used wisely,” he says.  “Don’t squander your words or your thoughts. Consider even the simplest action you take, for your lives matter beyond measure…and they matter forever.”Jones speaks to that part in everyone that is yearning to understand why things happen and what we can do about it.Like The Traveler’s Gift, The Noticer is a unique narrative blend of fiction, allegory, and inspiration in which gifted storyteller Andy Andrews helps us see how becoming a “noticer” just might change a person’s life forever.

                    Review

The Noticer by Andy Andrews is a book about an individual named “Jones” who offers perspective to many different people going through many different circumstances in their lives. It is a fiction book, but they way that it is written seems like it is non-fiction. “Jones” offers advice to young, old and in-between, always seeming to be in the right place at the right time, giving the right advice. This audiobook was high quality and read by the author, who did a wonderful job sharing his story.
